The impact of timebanking on volunteering behaviors
Abstract
Global declines in formal volunteering have prompted interest in alternative mechanisms like timebanking. This study investigates the impact of timebanking on future volunteering intentions using a between-subjects randomized survey experiment (n= 361) in Shanghai, China. Participants exposed to a timebanking vignette were nearly three times more likely to express high-frequency volunteering intentions than the control group. This positive effect was most pronounced among frequent volunteers with strong intrinsic satisfaction, but attenuated among self-interested respondents. These findings suggest that institutionalized, non-monetary incentives can increase willingness to participate without undermining intrinsic motivation.

全球范围内正式志愿服务参与率的下降，促使人们关注时间银行等替代机制。本研究使用在中国上海开展的一项被试间随机调查实验（n=361），考察时间银行对未来志愿服务意愿的影响。接触时间银行情景描述的被试，其表达高频次志愿服务意愿的可能性几乎是对照组的三倍。这一积极效应在具有强烈内在满意度的频繁志愿者中最为显著，但在自利型受访者中减弱。这些发现表明，制度化的非货币激励能够提高参与意愿，而不会削弱内在动机。
