A sense of responsibility: factors affecting individuals’ participation in coproduction delivery
Abstract
Citizens’ perceptions of their responsibility for coproduction, as well as those of the government, are critical because mismatches may lead to service failure. Using multiple datasets (N = 1,165), our results indicate that higher levels of perceived citizen responsibility increase individual coproduction activities, whereas higher levels of perceived government responsibility decrease these activities at the coproduction delivery stage. For successful citizen engagement in coproduction, it is crucial to clearly define and justify the roles of both governments and citizens in this context, in light of the perceived responsibilities associated with the impacts of coproduction.
