Design, institutional complexity and compromises: exploring the role of design in transforming dementia care
Abstract
This article examines how studies of compromises provide valuable insights into the role of design in fostering societal transformations. Based on a study in dementia care, we demonstrate how design processes dealing with wicked problems must navigate competing institutional demands and value conflicts. The article zooms in on how construction and maintenance of compromises become key in fostering transformations, while also highlighting how compromising implies that transformations may become less radical than anticipated. By integrating institutional complexity theory with justification theory, we explore how design for societal transformations evokes value conflicts and compromises anchored in discourses, practices and materiality.
